CONDUCTING WEEKEND - 2024

Furtados is pleased to announce the Con Brio Conducting Weekend: a workshop for aspiring conductors across the country. Mentioned below is the relevant information for potential applicants.
 

The workshop will be held on 4th and 5th May 2024 (Saturday and Sunday) in Porvorim, Goa. The first session commences at 10:30 am on 4th May (Saturday) and the last session ends at 7:30 pm on 5th May (Sunday). Selected applicants are requested to plan their travel accordingly.

DISCIPLINE

All the repertoire featured in the workshop will be confined within the framework of Western Classical music.

ELIGIBILITY

The workshop is open to all Indian nationals (including PIO and OCI card holders). Applicants may need to produce a passport for verification purposes.


Applicants are expected to have a minimum proficiency equivalent to Grade 8 (at Trinity College London) in their principal instrument.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The workshop consists of six sessions, each lasting two hours, with a maximum of 8 active participants. Each participant will be assured 60 minutes of hands-on experience before Choral, Piano and String Ensembles.

 

The repertoire covered during the workshop includes Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ A German Requiem, Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, and a few other works.

 

Participants will be provided with a video of them conducting the various ensembles which they can then use to apply for other Conducting workshops.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

The 2024 Conducting workshop will be led by Parvesh Java. Parvesh studied the piano with Delia Varga in India and later Deborah Sobol in the United States, where he completed a bachelor's degree in music, majoring in Piano and minoring in Composition and Literature at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Parvesh has attended several masterclasses for conducting in Italy and Germany, notably with Romolo Gessi and Lior Shambadal. He currently resides in Goa, where he directs the 100 member Stuti Choral Ensemble and runs Kamra, an intimate performance venue. Parvesh also holds a bachelor's degree in computer engineering and is keenly interested in projects at the intersection of technology and art.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMODATION

Applicants are expected to arrange travel (to and from Porvorim, Goa) and accommodation expenses on their own. We can assist you in finding accommodation. The exact venue address will be disclosed to the selected applicants by 7th April 2024.

FEES

There are no charges for entering the Pre-screening round.

The fee for the Conducting Workshop per selected applicant is Rs. 5,000/-, payable after selection.

The total cost (including travel, accommodation and workshop fee) should not be a deterrent for genuinely interested and meritorious applicants. Please ask for support, if required.

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Refer books, online tutorials, etc. to understand the basics of conducting, if you need to.

  2. Record a single, unedited take of you conducting the 2nd Movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, from bar 1 to bar 16.

  • Please note that this video is required to get a sense of how you feel the music and respond to it with your body, not to gauge your ability to conduct.

  • You are free to choose any performance as an audio reference to your conducting.

  • You may use a baton or bare hands to conduct in the video. Alternatively, you may also use a light, pointed stick (for example, a pencil).

  • Ensure that the camera is in front view, with your entire body (head to feet) being in the frame.

   3. Upload your video on YouTube. Ensure that the video can be viewed simply with a link.

   4. Submit the application form. To access the application form, click here.
